Anti-War Goes Gray

Young People Have No Interest in the Anti-War Movement

By

Q: Dear April Masini,

Why is today’s peace movement dominated by the middle-aged and the retired? Where are the kids?

Sincerely,

Curious Cadet

A:

Dear Curious Cadet,

Even though youth has the advantages of technology and the widespread and quick communications that goes with it, they are less aware of politics and world events than any other generation up to now. Most members of generation X and Y use technology for vertical enhancement of themselves and their lives -- not to educate themselves or keep up on what's going on in the rest of the world. Charity and world peace is left to the wealthy and the politicians. It’s the world that they’ve created for themselves. They’ve cocooned instead of spread their wings.

But that's not everyone!!

However, don’t forget that there are thousands and thousands of young Americans who have enlisted and are serving our Country. The problem of recognition is that they are from lower and middle class backgrounds, for the most part. There is hardly any elected official or current politician whose son or daughter has enlisted or been deployed to Iraq today. Those young men and women of wealthy families are sheltered from the military and from war. Soldiers going to war are, for the most part, lower class American citizens. And, while no one wants to admit it, the truth is, most of America doesn’t care about its lower class citizens the same way it does about its wealthiest.

Maybe one day there won't be such class difference when it comes to serving our country and protecting our citizens. I look forward to that day.
