Q: Dear April Masini,

I'm taking my children to their first baseball game, and I want it to be the same memorable experience for them as it was when my dad first took me. Is there anything special I can do beforehand to make this trip something they'll treasure from their childhood?

Sincerely,

Baseball Boy

A:

Dear Baseball Boy,
When out at the sports arena, nothing is more thrilling that catching a fly ball, so make sure you come prepared to the game for the rare chance of catching one.
*Never catch a fly ball without a glove. You will hurt yourself at least and break a bone or two at best.
*That said, BRING YOUR GLOVE to the game. Encourage your kids to bring their gloves. You never know who's going to catch a fly ball.

*Use two hands to catch the ball. One hand is in the glove, and the other hand is supporting the gloved hand. When you do catch a ball, use your free hand to trap the ball in your glove. Many balls only land in the catcher's glove ... and then bounce out. The worst disappointment!

*If you catch a ball, and you're sitting near the dug out, send your child down to the front row and yell the player's name to get their attention, then ask them to sign the ball.

*Wait outside the changing room after the game to get a player to sign a ball.

*Don't hassle the attendants and ushers -- they're truly not allowed to let you out of your area.
