Q: Dear April Masini,
Last night I heard my husband talking to some friends about a college boy who used his blogs to find dates! I’ve heard of dating websites but this is just ridiculous! What is the story with blogs and using them for hooking up!?
Sincerely,
Blog Curious
A:
Dear Blog Curious,
Although college is a free ticket to act crazy and date like there’s tomorrow, for most students, it’s a pretty lonely time. Pretending to have fun at the keg party, when they’d rather be home watching Survivor and eating pizza. Loneliness abounds.
So They Blog!!
Most college kids don’t have the confidence that comes with age and experience to hit the online dating services, which has led them to the ‘tween world between high school proms and full fledged blind dates: blogs.
What they are: Blogs are webblogs, which are journals that people (and tons of college kids) put online. When you blog, you leave yourself open to responses. Anyone can respond to your daily entries, online, and you can respond back! This is the brilliant way that college kids today meet. It’s Jane Austen and Emily Post meet Bill Gates. How to find one: Livejournal.com was one of the original blogs. But there are millions of ways to put yourself out there, or just lurk until you feel like responding! Blogs are often specific to your city, your ethnicity, or the ethnicity you’d like to get involved with, your political bent, sexual preference, even your diet — vegan bloggers unit!
Are You Ready to Blog? Here are some tips!
* Post a photo of yourself, or a playful icon that is representative of your mood. Change the photo, so your readers will want to keep up with how you’re doing each day.
* Blog when you feel like you have something to say. If it’s five times a day, then blog on! If it’s nothing for four days, then blog off! Let the reader know who you are. If you end up meeting up, and hooking up, it’ll be because you’re both interested in each other’s daily thoughts.
*Blog ettiquitte. DON’T YELL!! Writing in all caps is equivalent to loud behavior. Don’t be rude. Silence speaks volumes.
*If a blogger is not to your liking, block them from your blog to prevent further communications.
*Offer up meetings. Anyone interested in watching the Emmys and laughing hard, meet at the RA’s room in Peabody Hall — or wherever your dorm is!
But before you start getting blog-happy, double check to make sure you're looking great and up-to-date on how to date with my book Date Out of Your League!
And make sure that cyberdate is SAFE!
