Q: Dear April Masini,

My friend recently introduced me to a new online site that compiles a blog from our daily quick conversations. While the idea seems dumb to me, she says it's not only interesting but addictive. Is there any substance behind this trend?

Sincerely,

Blogging Betty

A:

Dear Blogging Betty,
Are you kidding me? Of course the snippets of conversation, small talk, phatic communication -- whatever you want to call it -- are messages, hints, cries for help, underlying communiques -- all of which add up to who the writer is at any given moment. Every snippet of communication is a dot on a road map to someone's personality and communication dynamic.
Freud said it a long time ago, when he said a cigar is never a cigar. Mystery writers know that these snippets of conversation or behavior are clues. Police know it. Psychologists know it.

Someone's mood and expression of behavior in blog-like snippets can give a hint as to who the person really is. Following someone's blog and understanding the collective snippets -- and the missing snippets as well (reading between the lines) -- can give you a great insight into how someone really feels.

Blogs are terrific ways to know more about yourself, your spouse, your romantic partners, your children, your friends and other family members. Reading someone's blog is akin to doing research on someone you're about to hire, interview in front of or go on a date with.

I'm all for blogs.
