Q: Dear April Masini,

I was driving the other day and passed a car plastered in obscene bumper stickers. The tamest one was "Mean People Suck." I mean, any mother who has kids looking out the window probably nearly died. What is the world coming to when we need to advertise our anger on our cars!?

Sincerely,

Sticker-free

A:

Dear Sticker-free,

What you wear telegraphs who you are before you even open your mouth to speak. What you put on the car you drive does the same thing that clothes do. Bumper stickers tell other people a lot about who you are before you even put your car into drive or land a hand on the horn.

Bumper stickers are ads about your feelings toward the world. When you display political bumper stickers, you're letting the world know what your political views, and invites conversation from others on the topic -- whether the "conversation" is words, a thumbs up or down from another driver or a honk in support or displeasure from another driver seeing your bumper sticker and your views.

Provocative bumper stickers that advertise sexual bravado send a message that the driver is a sexual being and maybe indiscriminate since he or she is broadcasting his or her sexual views to people they don't know.

Bumper stickers that support local schools, police fraternities or sports teams show the world who you think you are in terms of the community and that you're proud of your associations.
