Q: Dear April Masini,

I'll be going off to college within four months. I still don't know where to go though. I'm interested in career justice, but should I go to an institution that specifically focuses on that major? Or should I go to a university that offers that as one of many careers should I choose to change my major?

Sincerely,

College-Bound Carrie

A:

Dear College-Bound Carrie,

If you feel yourself being drawn to a career, don't try to doubt it. Just as there are fashion trends, parenting trends and body-type trends, there are college career trends. The media and it's glamorization of particular careers on television and in the movies, plays a huge part in influencing young people choosing careers and not so young people transitioning into new careers.

Right after the 1976 release of the Robert Redford film, All The President's Men came out, there was a huge surge in journalism school enrollments and journalism programs opening up on college campuses across America because of the glamorization of the investigative reporter. People have always been fascinated with crime and heroes against crime -- the police and law enforcement agents. It's no wonder at all that criminal justice careers are so popular now.
