Q: Dear April Masini,

I recently saw Christina Aguilera in concert as she's currently crisscrossing the country with her elaborate Back to Basics tour. I'm a huge fan of Christina, or Xtina as her fans call her. What has sustained her success all these years while many of the teeny boppers of the late '90s fizzled out?

Sincerely,

Idol Worshipper

A:

Dear Idol Worshipper,
Aguilera has presented an image and an icon to men and women that's been missing for a while. She's carved out a niche for herself from the Mickey Mouse Club alumni that doesn't include rehab, being the poster child for STDs or busting out of a girl group. She's followed her heart artistically -- sometimes to the detriment of record sales, but she's earned a place as an individual who still draws them in without being so far out there she's a cult figure or an "indie" star.
Aguillera uses her sexuality, which keeps her on the edge of intrigue for men and women. She's polished looking -- always a big plus for attracting the mass market, and she's got pipes. Men want her, women want to be her.

She doesn't flaunt her personal life, and she isn't married to a star with a competing need for publicity, which makes her seem more like "one of us". And that's one of the biggest reasons she's spanned the years when other pop stars have died out and become real estate agents.
