Q: Dear April Masini,

I have been in a dating rut lately -- I haven't met anyone new in months.

Do you have any advice for how I can expand my dating pool?

Sincerely,

Dating Blahs

A:

Dear Dating Blahs,

One way to meet new types of people is to change what have become your habits. Go to new places, do new things! It's more difficult than it sounds, though. Here are a few tips for getting out of your rut and having fulfilling new experiences, whether they garner dates or not!

* Understand why you’ve been averse to new experiences in the past. Are you fearful? Are you protecting someone? What’s holding you back?

* Take baby steps. Don’t expect to go sky diving if you have fear of new experiences. Start by doing something like having lunch alone in a restaurant.

* Bring a friend. Sometimes doing something new alone is a lot harder than doing something new with a pal or a friend.
