Draw Out Your Creativity

The Therapeutic Benefits of Drawing

By
Relationship Advice Expert April Masini

Q: Dear April Masini,

I've been stressed out and preoccupied lately, and have been trying to think of a way to get my mind off work and other issues that are going on. I don't want to go to a therapist, primarily because I don't want to spend my time talking about the issues. I just want a way to reflect and clear my mind. What are some alternatives to therapy?

Sincerely,

Preoccupied

A:

Dear Preoccupied,

I would suggest taking up a creative pursuit that you find enjoyable, low-stress and rewarding.

Anytime you expend energy somewhere -- whether it's drawing or sculpting or dancing -- you're releasing energy and the energy you release is negative energy which can be anger, depression or stress. Drawing can calm your mind down while you expend negative energy.
This has a really positive impact on your intrapersonal relationship and your interpersonal relationships. When you're letting go of anger and stress, and you're calming your mind at the same time, you're making space for clear thinking, and the more clearly you think, the more you know yourself. The more you know yourself, the better you'll be in a relationship -- whether it's with a spouse, a parent, a date or a neighbor.
