Q: Dear April Masini,
I have a really long commute to and from work; my job is extremely stressful and the insane amounts of traffic do not help! By the time I get to work in the morning, I feel like I have already had enough stress for the entire week. And by the time I get home in the evening, I feel like I could go to bed and sleep forever. Do you have any techniques that will help me relax while I'm in my car? Since I spend so much time in it, I figure I really should learn how to enjoy and calm myself down.
Sincerely,
Stress-Free in the Car
A:
Dear Stress-Free in the Car,
There's nothing worse than being stressed out before you even get to work. Unless it's being stressed out even after you've left work for the day! There definitely are things you can do that will make your daily commutes a bit less stressful for you. Don't forget to just relax and breathe...with your eyes still on the road, of course!
Tips for staying relaxed in your car:
1. Skip the car wash fragrances and keep a bottle of essential oil in your car to dab on the steering wheel or radio (which heats up when you have it on for a while and acts like an aromatherapy diffuser). Lavender is a great scent, although for some people it's a little strong. Try some natural oils in your beauty and health shop and pick one you like for your car.
2. Get a lumbar pillow for your driver's seat if your car does not have tricked out lumbar adjustments. The pillow will support your lower back and prevent back ache after long drives.
3. Treat your car to a detail and/or a car wash on a regular basis the same way you'd treat yourself to grooming therapy like manicures, massages, and facials to keep your car as well as you keep yourself. Be the car. Be the car.
