Education-Technology Is Changing Language and Literature

English Classics Being Left In The Dust

By

Q: Dear April Masini,

I am a junior studying English at a respected liberal arts university, yet at my school Shakespeare is not a requirement. I barely even learned about his writings in high school. Is an end for the study of English classics near for my generation?

Sincerely,

To Be Or Not To Be

A:

Dear To Be Or Not To Be,

Shakespeare is as foreign to young people as G2G (got to go) or POS (parent over shoulder) terms are to seniors. Language is changing. Technology is changing at lightning speed, and language is changing to fit the screen sizes, the speed and the keyboard-ability of words, phrases and dialogue. This change is happening faster than at any time in history, and Shakespeare isn't the only one who's getting left behind in the pile that is history, dwarfed by the mountain that is new technology, language, and literature.

Relationships and feelings are still pretty basic, but the expressions of those feelings have taken on a whole new genre, and keeping up with this genre is of more interest to most people than resurrecting Shakespeare.

It's not right, but it's the way it is.

In fact English majors will be phased out by Communications majors. Any minute now!
