Q: Dear April Masini,

After a long day at work, there's nothing I like more than to go out on the town. But I usually like to go out right after work, which means I don't have time to go home and get ready. How can I dress appropriately for work and still look hot while I'm out on the town late night?

Sincerely,

From Work to Play

A:

Dear From Work to Play,

While it takes a little bit of work, it's not impossible to go from work professional to out on the town chic in just a few short minutes.

How to go from day to night:

1. Makeup cues you and the rest of the world that you're ready for a day time adventure or a night time of glamour. Evening makeup is a little heavier, and a little more vibrant in order to be seen in the dark and through candlelight, depending on what your evening entails. Keep some eye liner, eye shadow in darker, sexier shades than you'd wear for day time, and even a pair of false eyelashes, in an "evening makeup bag" in your drawer at your desk at work. Also stash some foundation, a darker shade of blush than you'd use during the day, and a stronger fragrance for evening fun.

2. Depending on your office resources, you may want to stash a hair straightener in your bottom drawer. If you can plug it in in the bathroom at work, five minutes or more with the hair straightener will give you a glam evening look that you didn't have when you came to the office in the a.m.

3. Jewelry changes the mood, so some pearls, a necklace, some bangles -- whatever enhances your evening look from office to glam, extra evening fun or seductress -- will help you go from office to date or evening event. Keep the accessories in your purse in a cloth bag that shoes come in, to keep them from jangling around during the day.

4. Changing clothes is not usually an option, so plan ahead. A black dress or a monochromatic sheath is much easier to transform than a sundress or skirty and sweater. Trousers work great for day or night simply by unbuttoning a few buttons on your blouse for nighttime, and flashing a gorgeous camisole underneath that would be inappropriate for the office, but perfect for a party or date.

5. Like Mr. Rogers used to do, trade your daytime cardigan or sweater for a blazer when it comes to stepping out. You can wear it to work, ditch it during the day, and glam it up a night.
