Four Eyes Or Trendy?

Why Teens And Tweens Don't Like Glasses

Q: Dear April Masini,

My 14-year-old just found out she needs glasses and she's mortified! She is begging me to let her get contacts instead. I'm trying to tell her that glasses are actually really cool; I know a lot of people who are getting them with non-prescription lenses just beccause they want glasses so badly. Why is this age group so against glasses while it seems like they're so trendy among everyone out of their teen years? My daughter is certainly interested in getting the most trendy, expensive sunglasses, just not regular glasses.

Sincerely,

No Glasses for This Girl

A:

Dear No Glasses for This Girl,

You're absolutely right in that teens and tweens just aren't as into glasses as older generations are. But they do actually have very good reasons for the preferences.

Teens in glasses:

Glasses are not the trend in the teen and tween set. These kids definitely opt for contacts because they like the look of no glasses, and it's much easier to take gym class, dance, and be active in contacts than it is in glasses.

Adults in glasses:

You'll find glasses are all the rage among 20-, 30-, 40-, and 50-somethings. They can appreciate the sexy librarian look, and they also, quite frankly, aren't as active as 12, 13, and 14-year-olds, who run the risk of glasses flying every time they run for the bus, the lunch line, or the ice cream truck. Adults are more adept at changing from contacts to glasses, so they also have a wardrobe of eyewear that tweens and teens don't usually acquire.

Trends in sunglasses:

For teens and tweens who are donning sunglasses -- the big trend is white! White rimmed sunglasses and the bigger the better. Aviators are always popular among the teen set -- as a classic, but white is what you're going to see at boardwalks, beaches, and promenades where tweens and teens hang out this summer.
