Gay/Transgender Proms

Memorable High School Experience for Everyone

Q: Dear April Masini,

I am a gay 17-year-old high school student preparing for prom. I want my boyfriend to come with me, but the administration has so far been very rude to my attempts to buy an extra ticket. Many other students have bought extra tickets for out-of-school partners or friends. Are gay teens still an issue at proms?

Sincerely,

Prom Queen

A:

Dear Prom Queen,

The issues surrounding proms these days have less to do with heterosexual, homosexual, transgender students or even students going stag. Couples are often homosexual, bi-sexual, bi-racial, inter-religious and age-gapped -- and no one really cares so much any more the way they used to when sexuality had more of a norm. Now, the boundaries are far and wide.

Prom is a great time for students to celebrate the end of the year and when it's a senior prom, the end of their high school career. It's also a time to celebrate their burgeoning sexuality by dressing gowns and tuxedos -- or something very special. This is a time when young men and women go out into the world as adults in every sense of the word. Their sexuality and their expression of it is their choice and should be celebrated -- at prom or otherwise.
