Q: Dear April Masini,

I've recently been hearing a lot of people talk about religious themes in Harry Potter, something I've never thought about before! A lot of people are saying Harry is meant to be Jesus, and now that I'm re-reading the books, I wonder if that was JK Rowling's plan. Do you think the Harry Potter series is full of religious themes?

Sincerely,

Pray To Harry Potter

A:

Dear Pray To Harry Potter,

There may be religious themes in Harry Potter, but most likely, what Ms. Rowlings, a poor, welfare, single mother at the time she wrote the first Harry Potter book, had in the back of her mind was a main character who embodied herself and her son. Someone who was an innocent victim and forced to endure injustices that are a natural part of many divorces and broken families. In her subconscious, she saw Harry triumphing over unfairness and even evil. No doubt to me that Ms. Rowlings was hoping that she, like her main character, could do the same. And she did. Anyone who believes in psychology and the power of the subconscious might take note -- and anyone who believes that the subconscious is one step closer to God than the conscious, might consider religion here.

Harry's female friend was a platonic friend, not unlike Ms. Rowlings and her son. Emma Watson's character was very smart, but not always properly rewarded for her smarts. While she often saved the day, it was the male character -- or the male part of Ms. Rowlings psyche -- that came through as the hero.

These sweet, innocent, platonic friends who are the main characters in Ms. Rowlings' Harry Potter books and movies, are no doubt, all parts of Ms. Rowlings, and if you believe in God, then Ms. Rowlings is part of a larger order, that can be applied to many religious doctrines of many different religions.
