Q: Dear April Masini,
I've gone to movie theaters since I was a kid because I love seeing movies up close and on the big screen. Even as a kid there's always some new horror movie out that my boyfriend, or now my sons, want to see. With trends coming and going, I find it strange that horror films haven't gone by as a trend. Are scary movies here to stay?
Sincerely,
Scared Susan
A:
Dear Scared Susan,
Horror movies are not just a passing trend. Why? Because horror movies tap into an emotion that many people like to experience -- not so much fear, but conquering fear. Being scared is horrifying, but the rush that comes immediately after it is the conquering of that fear. It's the luxurious breath you take when you know you're okay -- and that character you were empathizing with on screen is not going to get massacred by the chain saw or bitten by the vampire.
Stars of movies are people that we identify with. Their ability to express and convey emotions allows us to recognize that feeling on the screen, within ourselves. We can then "hook into" the adventure they are going through and get scared -- and then be okay. When movies are boring it is because, in many cases, we don't empathize with the star and we can't feel the emotions that the story requires in order to allow us the rush we get on releasing or conquering them.April Masini -- nicknamed "the new millennium's Dear Abby" by the media, is author of the best-selling books Date Out Of Your League and Think & Date Like A Man, the two (just released) step-by-step dating and relationship manuals, Ideas for a Fun Date and Romantic Date Ideas, and the critically acclaimed dating and relationship online magazine www.AskApril.com.
