Q: Dear April Masini,
I just started dating a guy who is obsessed with drag racing. I don’t get it at all and think drag racing is a dangerous and dumb hobby. His friends all love it and get mad when I talk negatively about it. Can you explain the fun of it?
Sincerely,
What a Drag
A:
Dear What a Drag,
Cars are to men what shoes are to women.
Drag racing is to men what shoe shopping is to women.
Don't get the analogy? Let me go further: Men have always had a love affair with cars. Little boys love to play with cars, and grown men do, too. Drag racing is as close as intimate as you can get with a car. You're inside it, driving it, with a combination of reckless abandon and control. Sound like anything else men like to do?
The equivalent for women would be wearing a pair of Jimmy Choos to a public event and being admired.
The competition is tacit and implicit. The bravado is hawked without a word.
There is no other activity, besides drag racing, that better exemplifies the American man at his manliest.
