Q: Dear April Masini,
My kids just started high school this fall and are begging me to take them shopping for new clothes. I need to know what's in for the new school year so my kids can be as stylish as possible!
Sincerely,
In Style Mom
A:
Dear In Style Mom,
With my fashion advice, I have no doubt your kids will be the most stylish students at school this year!
Flats are back!
This may not mean much to your boys, but for girls, going back to school means new shoes, and flat shoes are in, while heels are o.u.t.! Stock up on ballet flats, Vans, and Converse flats. Also, for girls who want to keep the bar raised, boots that are flats are all the rage for back to school. A semi-slouch boot in suede, with a flat silhouette works with skirts, jeans, and everything in between.
Buh-bye hip huggers.
They were here for a minute, but wider leg jeans are coming back to balance the fashion pendulum that brought a skinny silhouette to jeans. No more cigarette leg jeans come September. Look for a more roomy leg and a higher waist for fashion forward students.
Dress it up!
Baby doll dresses have made their mark this summer and are continuing into fall. Empire waist tops and dresses without traditional waistlines are what you want to buy your daughter. Tight is out, and flowing silhouettes are in.
Bag it!
While moms are wearing Birkin bags and knock-offs that give arms a BIG bag to tote, school girls can look for seventies hippy bags in fabric, knits and woven textiles to tote their personal stuff as well as a notebook or two.
