Q: Dear April Masini,

My life is covered in Post-Its--refrigerator, computer, car, wherever I can find a spot. I put lists on them from grocery to to-do to party invites. My husband has been making fun of all my lists, but I insist they're an important way for me to organize. What should I tell him?

Sincerely,

List Maker

A:

Dear List Maker,

Why do we make lists? Can you spell c-o-n-t-r-o-l

Making lists is a simple way for us to feel like we have control over our lives. And the truth is, the act of making lists helps us gain control over our lives. Most of our lives have become so expansive that we need lists to help us remember our priorities -- whether for the day ahead of us or the week ahead of us or the emergency ahead of us.

Some people make lists to organize what they need to do in the next hour. Some people make lists to help them remember what they need to do in the next day. Some people make lists of "fires they need to put out" or emergencies that need attending before teeth even get brushed.

Crossing things off the list also give us a sense of accomplishment by reminding us visually that we've done what we set out to do that day.

Lists are a great way to help children, teens and even adults remember what's important. And as we get older, those lists help us get over "senior moments" that seem to be inevitable.
