Q: Dear April Masini,
Every time my brother, dad, boyfriend, boss, or any male goes to a sports game, even if it's at a bar watching a game, it seems my cell phone receives 20 texts on updates of the game. Perhaps for some reason they think I care about sports -- I don't know where they would have gotten that idea -- but lately it's been all the rage to text me about every touchdown. Why do men keep doing this?
Thanks,
Texting Tracy
A:
Dear Texting Tracy,
Okay, while the stereotype is girls yapping on the phone, the truth is men love their cell phones. And there's no time they love their cell phones more than in public.
Technology is here to stay, and that means everyone is as close as a couple of clicks on a keypad away. So, when sports fans get excited -- or devastated -- by a play, they don't have to be alone with their feelings. They can share them with whomever they want -- whether that person is at the game with them, or somewhere else, watching the game on a different technological venue.People have intense feelings, and these feelings are often too intense for them to acclimate by themselves. Sharing these feelings helps the person accept and ease into them. Calling a friend or family member to do this, is not so unusual. Even from the game.
Calling or texting from the game is merely a way of expressing intimacy -- long distance!
