Q: Dear April Masini,

My teenage daughters love Nick Lachey. I'm aware that as their 45-year-old dad, I'm not his core audience, but I just don't get his appeal at all. Since there are posters of him all over my house, I was hoping you could explain his allure?

Sincerely,

Baffled Dad

A:

Dear Baffled Dad,

I think you're in the right on this one. No one is going to remember Nick Lachey for his music. They’re going to remember him for his life. Face it. He’s a decent and sometimes even good singer and performer, but he’s not a stand out. He’s not outrageous in any way. He’s a good old boy. And without his personal drama, no one would pay much attention to him.

Lachey is an underdog, who clearly got rolled by the Simpson family, and was expected to fade into obscurity after his now ex-wife dumped him. But audiences love him because he’s the every man. He could have been any of us, marrying the girl next door who he met through work, only to be constantly compared to her father by her and her family, and to her by her family and audiences.

He didn’t have her drive or her family’s drive, and they didn’t like that. He was happy to fish, mow the lawn and drink beer in front of a ball game on a big screen with his buds. He’s not into the red carpet, big, thick books, or adopting multi-racial children. He’s boring. Like us. End of story.

The fact that his ex is flailing, personally and professionally, is the only reason that Lachey has any success. He’s seen in comparison to Simpson, and that’s why his records are selling. It’s the audiences way of sticking it to Jessica — and her family.
