No Need For Internet

Why 3 in 10 People Refuse to Use the Internet

Q: Dear April Masini,

I just read somewhere that 3 in 10 people refuse to use the internet. This seems absolutely crazy to me and I just don't understand. Why would some people just refuse to use the internet? Don't they want to be up-to-date with the world?

Sincerely,

Hook Yourself Up

A:

Dear Hook Yourself Up,

It might sound crazy to you and me, but there clearly are people out there who aren't interested in using the internet.

There are different reasons that people who refuse to use the internet do so:

*Stubborn mules. Some people are very stubborn and put their ego ahead of what is best for them. These people will put their foot down and refuse to use the internet for philosophical reasons even though their life would be a lot easier if they just used it. These people are more concerned with their own feelings than being part of a community.

*Lack of education. Believe it or not there are people in this country who are illiterate. In this day and age where technology has allowed so much, some people just don't have access to education and continue to lag behind the mainstream.

*Poverty. Poor people don't have computers or access to computers. They don't have internet service or access to it. Their lives are fraught with hand to mouth living, and using the internet falls far behind other priorities like paying rent and putting food on the table.

*There are people who are so involved in their own little worlds they really don't know what is going on in the rest of the world. They don't watch the news or read the paper, and they have no idea how much is going on -- including the internet.
