Q: Dear April Masini,

My sister just found out that she's having a baby girl and I can't wait to start buying her presents like little onesies and nursery decorations. The only thing is, I hate pink and refuse to buy it for her. I know that traditionally, people buy pink clothes and toys for baby girls and blue for boys. Does this still hold true or are more colors acceptable now? Please tell me they are!

Sincerely,

Anti-Pink

A:

Dear Anti-pink

The big news in baby nurseries (and the good news for you) is goodbye pink and blue -- hello yellow, green, orange, brown, and lavender!

Gone are the old days of pink is for girls and blue is for boys. While there are still traditional nursery diehards, modern moms are opening their eyes -- their babies' first bedrooms -- to new colors for baby nurseries.

There are so many non-traditional moms and non-traditional families now, that it makes sense that traditional pink and blue are being laid to rest and making way for new, non-traditional nursery colors. Mothers want to do something different than their own mothers did, and adopting a color scheme that is fresh, new and hip is a great way to do so. This new color scheme reflects the new state of the family -- traditional, Norman Rockwell type families are no longer the majority. Blended families, divorced families, families with two mommies and/or two daddies, families with single parents, families with adopted children, and families with sperm donor kids or surrogate moms all make up the norm. With this new population it makes complete sense that there are new colors for nurseries.

Of course, this means all the hand-me-down bedding, furniture, and clothing that was pink and blue for so long will probably hit the Goodwill pile; everyone loves shopping for new things for a new baby.
