Q: Dear April Masini,
You know road rage? Well, I get it every day and I don't even get in the car! I'm a pedestrian who walks to work everyday and the drivers out there are crazy. Sometimes I find myself getting too worked up over them, I feel like I'm going to have a nervous breakdown by the time I get to work. How can I tame my walker's road rage?
Sincerely,
Raged While Walking
A:
Dear Raged While Walking,
Road rage isn't just something that drivers get. Walkers are out on the road too and they can feel rage as well. Learn to avoid walking rage!
How to avoid being a victim of road rage for walkers:
* Walk defensively. Don't step out when the light is red or yellow. Don't cross against the light.
* Look before you cross and don't challenge drivers.
* If someone tries to engage you in their rage, disengage. Rage is one thing. Fighting takes two.
* Be aware of your stress level. If it's high, keep yourself in check.
* Take a time out. Feel like you're going to lose it? Take 10 breaths. Get a cup of tea or a bottle of water for a break.
* Caffeine will get you going, and if you're angry, it'll get you angry and energetic. Don't load up on caffeine or other stimulants if you're prone to rage on the road or when crossing the street.
