Road Rage Redux

Avoid Losing It While Driving

By
Relationship Advice Expert April Masini

Q: Dear April Masini,

I am usually a good driver and typically very calm, but when I got cut off on a freeway exit yesterday, I got so mad I nearly had to pull over. Traffic in my area is awful and drivers appear to be getting worse by the day, and I'm worried one day my frustration will come to a head. How can I stay cool when I'm driving?

Sincerely,

Road Rager

A:

Dear Road Rager,

Staying calm and driving carefully are important in being a responsible person on the road. Here are some other tips to avoid overreacting while you're driving:

* Drive well.

* If you're driving slowly, stay out of the left lane.

* If someone tries to engage you in their rage, disengage. Rage is one thing. Fighting takes two.

Avoid raging on the road:

* Be aware of your stress level. If it's high, keep yourself in check.

* Take a time out. Feel like you're going to lose it? Pull over and get out of the car. Take 10 breaths. Get a cup of tea or a bottle of water for a break.

* Caffeine will get you going, and if you're angry, it'll get you angry and energetic. Don't load up on caffeine or other stimulants if you're prone to rage on the road.
