Simpsons Still Strong

Why The Simpsons Have So Much Staying Power

Q: Dear April Masini,

I cannot even believe how popular The Simpons are. I watched them growing up and they're still around. Not only that, but they just came out with a Simpsons movie. It is rare for one show to be around for so long. How does The Simpsons have so much staying power?

Sincerely,

Simpsons For President

A:

Dear Simpsons For President,

You're absolutely right in that not only are The Simpsons still producing new episodes, but they're as popular as ever. Most shows definitely do not have this kind of staying power.

The Simpsons have staying power because:

* The show is funny and edgy.

* The cartoon characters don't go to rehab or jail, and they don't ask for raises. A lot easier dealing with animated characters than real life actors.

* The Simpsons captured the delicate cross between black humor and heart. There's enough black humor and schedenfreude in the show, yet there's genuine love and good feelings for each other among the characters. Not an easy thing to do, and this show did it.

* The show is easy for people of lower and middle classes to relate to. It's not a black show or a white show because the characters are all golden with blue and yellow and brown hair.

* The Simpsons knows where the edge is. Unlike Southpark, The Simpsons doesn't stays on this side of the line that is vulgar. Just barely, but it stays.
