Lately all of the models in magazines seem like Plain Janes. Is there a trend toward models who are more average looking?

Dear Plain Jane,

There is not so much a trend toward average looking people as there is a trend toward the middle — more average looking people are looking more glammed up than ever before thanks to plastic surgery and it’s new accessibility, technology spurred cosmetics and medical/cosmetics like Botox -- and fitness becoming more important to everyone from children through seniors. 

The average looking woman is less frumpy than she used to be, and in fact, Ugly Betty may have America Ferrera frumped down on the show, compared to her glammed up appearance on the Golden Globes award show, but it also has some very gorgeous celebrity/actresses on the show, like Salma Hayak and former Miss (Almost) America, Vanessa Williams, so people aren’t tuning in just to see America looking average — they’re also looking for Salma and Vanessa looking way above average.

HOW IMPORTANT IS APPEARANCE? 

Appearance telegraphs messages about who you are. Guys, like women, look for clues about who someone is when they are looking for a date or a relationship. Watches, handbags, haircuts and shoes all telegraph messages about who someone is, and it’s no surprise that some guys want to date women with nice watches and designer bags. These men are looking for women who are upwardly mobile and who know how to fit into groups of successful people in all kinds of social situations. Many times men look for women who will be easy to acclimate into their social situations. Men want to date women that they can take to company dinners, on business trips and out with their friends without having any discrepancy in manners, goals or good times. 

A woman wearing a stylish, expensive watch telegraphs that she cares about details in her appearance and in other parts of her life. A woman who wears a beat up Timex watch telegraphs that she is not that interested in accessories, jewelry or appearances. That she is wearing a watch at all does show that she cares about schedules and being places on time. But a man who’s looking for someone he can take to exclusive places will most likely want to date a woman with a nice watch or a nice handbag. 

All that said, any woman who is looking to date a man who travels to exclusive and successful places and will want to take her to lavish events, should immediately start to update her look. A great haircut, good makeup, the right clothing (meaning clothing that is appropriate for what you are doing, fits well, and broadcasts confidence and success) as well as accessories are all tools to enhance who you are and who you want to be with.
