Obscure Sports and Extracurriculars Can Win Big Scholarships

Q: Dear April Masini,
I'm a high school sophomore and I'm already starting to think about college, mostly because I know I can't afford it. We are by no means poor, but sending me to a good private college that I want to attend is too much for my parents' finances and I'm trying to figure out how I can do it without going into mountains of debt like my older brother did.
Are there any special scholarships or different ways of financing college available?
Sincerely,
College Bound
A:
Dear College Bound,
Sports may not be the first thing that come to mind when you are thinking about scholarships -- at least ones that you can get. Most people see sports scholarships as highly competitive, which they are if you're looking to play football or basketball or some other high-revenue sport.
But there are a lot of other sports as well, and colleges are willing to offer full or partial scholarships to students who can play them well. Because the field is a lot less competitive, you have a better chance of excelling at these sports, and finding something you love doing as well!
Here are a couple of ideas for you: * Do your homework and find out what the college you’re interested in needs in terms of athletes.
* Women’s golf, for instance, is a big competitive sport at some colleges, and the number of women competing for these scholarships is way, way, way fewer than men’s basketball or football athletes.
* Find your sport — or find theirs!
Best of luck, and choose your college thoughtfully and carefully.
