Q: Dear April Masini,

What happened to seeing movie trailers before movies in the theater? While they still show them (way more than enough), I've been seeing a lot of movie trailers on television lately. This seems totally out of place. What gives?

Sincerely,

Trailers on the Small Screen

A:

Dear Trailers on the Small Screen,

The reason that you're seeing movie trailers on television is that there is more crossover between television and movies today than ever before. There was a time about two decades ago when movie stars were movie stars and television celebrities were "less than" in status. Movie stars who went on television were "slumming it". Television stars all wanted to be in film.

But that time has changed.

Television stars now frequently make and star in movies and vice versa! This means that television viewers are watching their favorite movie stars when they're channel surfing, so it makes total sense for studios to advertise new movies on television.

And this isn't going to stop with your television. Buckle up for more -- you're going to be seeing your favorite stars from television and movies on your computer (if you haven't already) and on your cell phone. Wherever there is a screen, you're going to be seeing entertainers who make money for someone besides themselves by performing, and you're the consumer!

Screening your movies and screening your calls will take on new meaning!
