Q: Dear April Masini,

Remember the awful years when guys wore huge baggy pants with their boxers hanging out? I haven't seen as much of that lately as I have of guys in super tight skinny jeans. Am I right that guys' fashions seem to be changing?

Sincerely,

Tighten it Up

A:

Dear Tighten it Up,

The fashion pendulum swings back and forth and everything old is new again.

The new look for men:

After the baggy look consumed men's fashions, and boxers were showing because pants were so baggy they looked like they were going to fall off the hip-hop fashionistos, we're back to the fashion of skinny, slim silhouettes. It's the EXACT opposite of the baggy look. Men's fashions are looking more tailored and even flat out skinny at the extreme skater look, where guys in skinny jeans recall London's Liverpool looks.

And of course everything else that a man puts on his body after the skinny pants are going to change based on the proportions. Jackets will be slimmer to address the slimmer pants. Shoes that worked so well with trousers that hung generously will not work with trousers that are thigh skimming (or hugging).

And bye bye boxers. There's no room for all that material under these slimmer pants. While tighty whities work, the more fashionable hugging boxers made of jersey are the choice of men with an eye towards looking good dressed -- and undressed.
