Q: Dear April Masini,

I really want to get a new pet, something to keep me company when I'm at home alone, but I'm not sure what kind to get. I was planning on getting a really small dog since my apartment isn't huge, but my friend told me I'd look like a sissy with a small dog and I need a big manly one. Is this true? If I get a small dog will people really think I'm not a real man?

Dear Need a Real Man's Dog,

Our choice of pet really does say a lot about us. But just because you're interested in having a small dog does not necessarily mean people will see you as a "sissy." When it comes down to it, you need to get the pet that will be the best fit for you and your lifestyle, but you should also be aware of what your pet says about you.

Here are the various things your choice of pet says about you:

Big dogs - People who like big dogs want protection in their animals. These people will be protective of their family and friends. On the other hand, men who like big dogs want someone their own size to wrestle and play with. These men (and occasionally women) like full contact sports as often as possible. The same goes for their sex lives. 

Toy dogs - Women who like toy-sized dogs want their dogs to be manageable. They want dogs that they can plop in their purses, or over one arm. They may see their dogs like babies or accessories. They want their lives to be the same way -- manageable. The dog is more for the woman than it is for the family. Men who like small dogs want to take care of the dogs and feel protective toward them. Some men like small dogs because they think that they are accessory-like. Men with small dogs want things to be neat and conquerable. Women with small dogs are not interested in rough and tumble sex. They want special care to their special parts. 

Personality dogs - People with pugs and bull dogs and other such dogs are unique and like things and situations that are different. They like quality, but not same old, same old. They like to march to the beat of their own drummer. Sex with people who own these dogs is going to be fun and sometimes "out there." Be ready for anything!

Cats - People who own cats like lots of cuddling after sex. They don't want big interruptions in their lives without some quality down time. 

Tarantula - owners consider themselves individuals who don't want to blend into a crowd. These people will be intense in bed and intense in relationships. 

Ferret - owners are more about fun than anything. Having sex with a ferret owner means light-hearted, low key sex -- and make sure the ferret is locked up while you're at it!
