Entertainment: Nancy Drew … Again

Nancy Drew is a comeback kid in the movies because teens and especially girls and young women who are teens and tweens are looking for role models who don’t have tattoos, eyeliner and cleavage. It’s hard for young women to find role models who aren’t advertising their sexuality on television onr in the movies and certainly on MTV and in the music business.
Nancy Drew is a solid character who used to be mainstream, but today, would be a girl nerd. Boy nerds have been back and big business for quite some time with Ben Stiller playing the uncomfortable in his own skin underdog and John Heder playing Napolean Dynamite and then the skater in Blades of Glory, giving male nerds star power.
Female audiences have not been given many nerds to embrace. Annabel Breslin was hugely embraced as the nerd hero in Little Miss Sunshine, but she was a young girl, and not the tween/teen that we haven’t seen in the movies since The Princess Diaries.
In addition, parents of young women are going to be thrilled to see Nancy Drew on the big screen and endorsed with Hollywood’s seal of approval, a Julia Roberts relative. Finally, a young woman who doesn’t have to trade on her sexuality in order to win the big screen audiences!
