National trends are definitely towards driving and staying closer to home due to the rising cost of gas prices that affect all of our travel. In addition fear of terrorism is keeping families closer to home because they think they’re safer on American soil.

The boom in high gas mileage hybrid cars has increased the number of people wanting to drive to and for their vacations. Driving gives folks flexibility to pick up and go that they don’t have when they’re reliant on planes and airports. Being bumped from an overbooked flight can put a dent in any vacation, whereas driving prevents that kind of problem. Driving also cuts out time wasted on flight delays and hour or more long security line waits.

The family vacation is still cheaper taken by car than by plane when you calculate the price of four or more plane tickets roundtrip and hotel and/or rental car costs, as many plane tickets are also reflecting the higher cost of gasoline.
