Community Marriage Policies (CMPs)CMPs, are, on the most superficial level, a good idea. The religious leaders in a community band together (in and of itself a rarity), and do all they can to educate engaged couples about the hardships of marriage, offering the couple rigorous counseling, and the like. The problem arises over what happens if a couple refuses to participate. In that case, these same religious leaders will also refuse—to marry the couple! CMPs are, therefore, not optional, they are the only option. And taking away choice from the people is never a good sign. It is also not necessarily a “good sign” that they claim to have reduced divorce rates. People who are strongly religious have always been less-inclined to divorce, but this is absolutely no indication that their marriage isn’t loveless, sexless, abuseless, or monogamous. All it proves is that they don’t believe in divorce. CMPs are a good idea, taken one step way too far.
