Education Today: Thoughts About the LAUSD Reform Measure

Great idea! I’m a relationship expert and I get a lot of questions from Los Angeles parents about their relationships with their kids and their kids’ schools. Basically, what I hear is that parents are frustrated with the communication process. While I tell them it’s a chore to communicate with ANY teenager, it should not be a chore to have a line of communication that works with your child’s school, be it teachers, administrators or athletic coaches, but the problem is that schools, like the parents of the children they teach, are overburdened. Reducing school size and making learning communities more manageable is a great way to begin to see what’s wrong and what’s right. My concern is that members of these communities are going to be expecting too much too fast from these smaller communities, and what needs to be remembered and reminded is that this step is a process in adjusting education to best meet the needs of the community it serves.
