Dating Your Political Opposite

Just like few topics are more divisive than politics, so too are there few that allow people to immediately feel connected to virtual strangers like politics does. In part because a choice in politics says much more about you than whether you believe in increased taxes for the wealthy. It speaks to everything (though it’s not always right) from race and economic bracket to what types of music you like, and even the types of sex you might be inclined to have!

But, isn’t it true that opposites attract?

Dating Expert April Masini“Yes,” states Masini. “There is certainly a myth that opposites attract, and while it can be exciting and interesting (at first) to add spice to our lives by dating someone who’s perceptions and opinions are completely different from our own — just wait until that initial intrigue and challenge wears off! What you will be left with is a person who thinks, feels, behaves, and acts, in ways we don’t understand, agree with, or consider to be normal.”

Why is dating someone inside your political party better than dating someone outside it?

“The truth is, instead of opposites attracting, ‘like’ attracts ‘like,’ answered Masini. “And if you doubt this, step back for a moment and think about the people you’ve remained friends with the longest. Chances are you will find it is people whose beliefs and perceptions about the world are similar to your own and someone whose actions and behavior and not in conflict with your idea of what is normal.”
