Britney–We Said Get Clean not Mrs. Clean

Really, Britney, the whole head shaving thing is so Sinead O’Connor. You probably don’t remember her. She was around in the eighties, the first time you were bald. You’ll notice, we don’t hear much about her anymore. In fact, we don’t hear anything about her at all. She has gone to a place called obscurity because weird behavior doesn’t beget long term marketablility.
The fact that this story was top news on radio and television all day is every bit as scary as Britney’s creepy cranium. Don’t people get wasted and get tattoos and crazy hair alterations on a pretty regular basis? Surely there was real news going on today but you wouldn’t have known it. And I can’t lie. I was in a convenience store, riveted to the TV as they reported on Brit’s latest escapade.
It probably is similar to the Sinead-o-shave two decades ago. Sinead was rebelling against the establishment, government…whatever. I think Britney’s rebelling against people’s expectations of her. As I’ve said before, she wasn’t allowed to grow up normally. She was parading around on stage, nothing more than eye candy, when she was still a little girl. She didn’t get to form as an individual. How does a person handle that internally? Â
Did anyone care about her thoughts, feelings, questions, fears and other emotions as they developed or was all the focus on other “developments?” What happens to a plant if you sprinkle fertilizer on it but never water it? It burns, shrivels and dies. Isn’t this what’s happening to Britney? Massive amounts of adoration for the wrong reasons may have made her want to destroy her external qualities because the internal ones were overlooked, ignored and squashed during the time when they should have been nurtured and encouraged.
I think people mostly like Britney Spears. She’s been an icon and she’s been a fool but I think we saw it coming. And now we feel sorry for her. We want her to be happy and safe. We want her to love her kids and not create any more wreckage in her life. If her cries for help are answered and someone (not Paris Hilton) can guide her back to herself, the comeback people keep anticipating may actually be possible.
