Jessica Simpson Grows Up and Looks Great Doing It

Since I’ve already copped to being a closet tabloid junkie (sometimes I pretend I only read them for blog material), I’m going to come completely clean and share my latest find–OK! Weekly. It’s only $2.99 and it has the best pictures of any of them. The articles are equivalent to People, Us and the rest. They use all the same sources–people “close to” the subjects of their articles. I’m most impressed with the pictures.
The one I just got is the “complete Oscar special issue.” It has an “exclusive interview” with Pam Anderson giving advice to Britney. Since I’m actually trying to be nice this blog I won’t point out that Britney should benefit from Pam Anderson’s advice just about as much as she benefitted from Paris Hilton’s.
Anyway, I found out in AA that I make fun of people because I don’t like myself. I think I do it because I like to laugh at my own jokes. Either way celebrities are such easy targets. One that I simply couldn’t tolerate for a while is Jessica Simpson. To me she just seemed totally insipid and useless. But I think something’s changed. Maybe her divorce from Nick Lachey was good for her.
As I flipped through my magazine tonight looking at the red carpet heroes and casualties, wondering just exactly how sparkly 375 carats of diamonds really are, I turned to a page featuring a really good looking, wholesome, happy couple. The woman was a beautiful brunette who I don’t remember seeing before. I looked below and it was Jessica–with her new boyfriend, singer John Mayer. His sideways glance and smile remind me so much of Matt Dillon back in the eighties. She looks stunning with dark hair and her smile is big and genuine. It did a cynic’s heart good to see the transformation.
Maybe it’s just me but it seems like when someone who’s been blonde for a long time goes brunette it almost always looks good. In Jessica’s case, her skin looks more radiant, her brown eyes look bright and full of life. They actually give the impression that there may be a brain cell or two floating around behind them. If she did botox her lips, they look very natural. She looks like a content, self-assured, mature woman instead of a vapid bimbo.
Of course, who am I to talk? I’m sitting here implying that a change of hair color adds depth and substantive character to a person who was seemingly devoid before. AA also makes me look at myself honestly–yuck. Maybe eventually John will sing Jessica’s praises but I’m certainly glad to be able type them here.
