Advice Seeker: Dear April Masini,
I've been feeling so down in the dumps lately and I don't know what's wrong with me. I really want to cheer myself up but I don't even know where to start. Do you have any tips for how I can get rid of my blues?
Sincerely,
Blue is My Least Favorite Color
Dear Blue is My Least Favorite Color,
Everyone gets the blues sometimes; the trick is learning how to beat them, and I think I can be of some help to you.
Top Tips for Beating The Blues:1. Recognize patterns in your blues. Do you get blue at the same time every year? Every month? Every week? Every day? Do you get blue after a specific incident occurs? After certain foods like caffeine? Alcohol? Sugar? Knowing your blues will help you beat them.
2. What is it you're feeling -- exactly? Sadness? Loneliness? Anxiety? Anger? Again, know your blues so you can take them apart and get rid of them piece by piece.
3. When are you happy? If there are certain times you are happy, then just knowing that your happiness and your blues have a pattern allows you to be patient and ride them out.
4. What makes you happy? If you can identify triggers to your happiness, you can release them when you're feeling down. For instance, if being outdoors makes you happy, go outside when you're starting to feel down.
5. Are you taking care of yourself? Many people who are caretakers don't realize the toll that taking care of others takes on themselves. Make time for yourself -- but before you do that, recognize that you are or aren't taking care of yourself.
6. Small steps. A manicure can make your day, as can eating a salad instead of junk food. You don't have to do an entire life makeover in order to start feeling better. A yoga class or a phone call to a dear friend may do the trick.
