Relationship Advice Expert April Masini

Advice Seeker: Dear April Masini,

Fall is approaching and I need to update my beauty routine. Do I need to stop getting my blonde highlights and start going darker? And should I be changing the colors and shades of my makeup? Also, how can I prepare my skin for the cold weather ahead? I need some fall beauty tips fast!

Sincerely,

Preparing For Fall

April Masini's advice:

Dear Preparing For Fall,

After light hair, light makeup and light colored polish for your manicure and pedicure, fall comes and it's time to take it up a notch in terms of color and moisturizing. Fall makeup calls for darker, richer color in makeup.

The nude toes of summer should kick up to red and brownish red. The light colored gloss of summer lips can kick up to a darker shade. Eye colors can go darker, too. The only thing that gets lighter is foundation color as summer suntans fade and it's time to re-adjust your foundation to match your fall color skin -- and then again, in winter when your skin may look even different than it does in fall.

In addition, moisturizing needs change with fall weather. The summer heat begins to fade away, and there is less moisture in the air and on your skin. Moisture needs change and a nighttime moisturizer is best at this time.

In addition, don't forget your hands and feet when it comes to moisturizing with seasonal changes. Keep a good hand moisturizer in your purse and your car glove compartment for use any time, and moisturize your feet at night before you go to bed.

Fall skin is affected primarily by:

1. Temperature changes

2. Dryness

3. Chapping and wind-burning

The best way you can combat these winter skin issues is as follows:

1. Moisturize to eliminate as many temperature changes as possible.

2. Hydrate to prevent dryness -- not just by moisturizing, but by drinking water and running a humidifier in several rooms in the house to add moisture to heated air.

3. Wear sunscreen even in the winter. The glare of the sun off of the snow can burn your skin. Protect your skin from chapping with products like Vaseline or specialty skin products.
