Relationship Advice Expert April Masini

Advice Seeker: Dear April Masini,

Our grandkids are coming to visit for a few days and we want to keep them entertained. The only problem is we're not exactly sure what to do with them! Now that we're older it's not like we can go outside and run around kicking a soccer ball with them. How can we have fun with our grandkids and make them want to come back and see us again and again?

Sincerely,

Want to be Fun Grandparents

April Masini's advice:

Dear Want to be Fun Grandparents,

DIY with the grandkids requires some analysis of what your grandkids like to do, what they're good at, what their attention span is --- and what yours is!

Activities to do with your grandkids:

If your grandchildren like cooking or creative projects, try making cookies or preparing a holiday meal with them.

For some granddaughters this is a real treat -- to take out the good china and silver and to make something special with the grandparents.

Teach your grandchildren cards, poker, or some other game that you normally play with friends. This is great if your grandchild has the mental capacity to grasp the complexity of whatever game you're teaching them. It could be golf or it could be scrabble. If the game is too hard for their age or their personal development, don't set them up to fail. Undertake something that will be fun for them -- and you.

Give your grandchild their first camera and take them shooting.

Some grandkids LOVE cleaning out your closets and garages if theirs stuff in it for them. This is a perfect time to give away jewelry, shoes, and vintage clothing that you think is drab and they think is hip!
