Dating Tips - Date and Diet

Advice Seeker: Dear April,

I've been watching my weight lately but also started to date again. These two activities definitely do not seem to go together. Whenever I start dating a new guy, he takes me to a fabulous restaurant and insists on appetizers, dinner, and dessert, with lots of cocktails throughout the night. I really want to continue dating, but don't want to get obese in the process. Any advice?

Sincerely,

Dining Dater

April Masini's advice:

Dear Dining Dater,

You don't have to die an old matron just to keep yourself healthy. Trust me, I have the perfect advice on how to date and keep control of your diet.

Tips for Dieting and Dating Happily:

*Steer your dates around activities and not meals. Instead of dinner and a movie (can you spell sedentary sloth?), go bowling or swimming or play tennis.

*Date in between meals!

*Don't order an appetizer at dinner -- or lunch.

*Don't order dessert -- instead get a cappuccino.

*Drink lots of water to curb your appetite.

*Don't make dinner dates late at night. It's easier to burn off calories if you eat earlier in the day than before bed.

*Tailor your ethnic food to your diet. For example -- if dinner is at an Italian place, don't get pizza. Instead get a half order of linguine and clams and a half order of salad. And don't eat the bread! If dinner is French, go for the salad nicoise or some fish that is NOT in a cream sauce. Mexican food can be broiled fish with vegetables without the rice and beans.
