All About The Latest Trend Toward Environmentally Friendly Clothing

Eco-Friendly Fabrics

Advice Seeker: Dear April,

A lot of my friends are becoming much choosier about where they shop and the clothes they buy. Some of them refuse to wear anything made of a fabric that isn't "eco-friendly." Why do people all of the sudden care about wearing eco-friendly clothing and are we going to start seeing more of it available? Do you think this trend will stick around?

Sincerely,

Friendly Fabric

April Masini's advice:

Dear Friendly Fabric,

These days it does seem like more and more people are seeking out eco-friendly clothing that is also fashionable. But what does this trend mean for us? And just how long will it be around?

Why is this issue important to consumers?

The environment is important to consumers, and therefore, politicians, and as a trickle down effect, businesses, now more than ever. Yes, this is a trend because the environment has always been here, as has pollution, as has labor issues. Many consumers and politicians have latched on to this issue because it is less of a hot button than more personal issues that more directly affect our bodies and the bodies of our loved ones like war and abortion. It's assumed that everyone wants a clean earth. That makes this issue less offensive to more people, and it's been embraced by so many, as a result. Never one to shy away from a business opportunity, the fashion industry has jumped on board and is promoting eco-friendly fashion.

Are consumer choices influencing how materials and fabrics are produced?

The dollar is every consumer's vote, and every dollar they spend is a vote towards the popularity and proliferation of a product. If consumers buy eco-friendly fashions they will become more available at cheaper prices. If consumers don't buy eco-friendly fashions, they'll go away as fast as culottes and gaucho pants.

Does this trend have staying power?

The question makes me laugh because the definition of a trend is a temporary wave. This trend is temporary. It does not have staying power. In fact, there are people who have ALWAYS refused to purchase man-made fabrics and clothing with polyester or other man made fabrics for their children and themselves. But for now, the advertising industries and business have taken the "eco-friendly" term and run with it. Enjoy the trend. There will be another one coming along in an hour.
