Advice Seeker: Dear April Masini,
I grew up dying and painting Easter eggs, but my kids don't want to do it. They think the hard-boiled eggs are gross and would rather just eat chocolate eggs. I don't want to force them into a tradition they don't like (and that takes a lot of work), but I would like them to give it a chance. Do you have any tips for how I can Easter traditions more fun for them?
Sincerely,
Mother Hen
Dear Mother Hen,
Of course kids would rather eat chocolate than just about anything else!! But it's really up to parents to make their own holiday traditions, and if parents only buy chocolate eggs for kids, that's the trend that they are responsible for setting. It is a shame, though, to lose the ritual of painting real Easter eggs.
For kids who are old enough to handle egg shells without breaking every single one, there is the old tried and true method of poking a pin hole in each end of an egg, and blowing through one pin hole until the insides of the egg comes out the opposite pin hole. The now hollow egg shell is perfect for decorating. The decorating can be done simply or elaborately with paints or sequins, beads, paints, pastels -- pretty much anything!
Combining old traditions and new traditions are great ways to impart holiday and family at Easter.
