How To Get Over A Break Up

Should I Move to the City After My Divorce?

How To Get Over A Break Up

Advice Seeker: Dear April,

I recently divorced my husband of three years after living in suburbia. This divorce, while scary and sad at times, has also empowered me to move to the city. I feel like the city will offer me all those adventures I've been missing out on for the last few years with my husband. But another part of me feels that I will be getting in over my head after a painful divorce. Do you have advice on whether or not I should move to a city? And do you think moving will help my dating life?

From,

City-seeker

April Masini's advice:

Dear City-seeker,

You are not alone in your gravitation to the city. The city offers things that no suburban environment ever could.

One of the biggest drives in the trend toward urban living is divorce. There are more singles than ever, and for the first time, as reported by the New York Times, recently, singles outnumber marrieds.

When couples divorce, they often want to try something new in their lives -- that is something different from the SUV or the Volvo station wagon and the three bedroom house with the white picket fence. They want an urban life in a loft or a townhouse, and they want to feel single -- surrounded by singles and inter-mingling with singles. The suburbs are NOT the place to do that. The cities are. Cities are traditionally places where things can happen, as opposed to places like the suburbs where things stay settled.

With this infusion of singles -- comes a need for all that singles need -- furnishings, entertainment, transportation, parking, and pet accommodations. It's no wonder the suburbs are dead compared to the new life infused into the city.
