Insider Advice on When it's OK to Get Products on the Cheap

Makeup Tips - Beauty at a Bargain Price

Advice Seeker: Dear April,

I'm on a budget and I am trying to figure out which of my department store makeups and beauty products I can switch out for drugstore brands. I buy everything in the more expensive name brands now. I don't want to ruin my looks or my skin, but I'm sure some of it can be switched out. Do you have any advice on what beauty products are OK for me to get bargains on?

Signed,

April Masini's advice:

Dear Beauty Bargain Shopper,

There are several places you can cut back and save on makeup by buying drugstore brands--and you won't notice a thing! Here are some of the places you should feel free to switch to drugstore brands:

1. Wink wink: When it comes to mascara, the pink and green tube is the beauty industry standard. Don't splurge on mascara. Get yours at the drug store -- and get it every three to six months so your makeup is fresh and your eyes are healthy.

2. Brush Up: One of the most expensive makeup tools are makeup brushes. They can cost up to $100 a brush if you're buying high end. If you want to save -- go to the art supply department and buy paint brushes. They come in different sizes, shapes and textures and they're just as effective and much cheaper.

3. Lip Service: When it comes to a clear gloss for your lips, buy cheap at the drugstore. When it comes to color -- splurge on the department store cosmetic company brands.
