Relationship Advice Expert April Masini
Advice Seeker: Dear April Masini,
I screwed up. Big time. My girlfriend and I have never seen eye-to-eye on one particular subject: her mother. Her mom gets totally involved in her life and is constantly ordering my girlfriend around -- and she listens! She's 27, by the way. My girlfriend contends that it's none of my business what her relationship with her mother is like.
I finally believe her. A few days ago, I said a few choice words about her mom when she called in the middle of our date night. My girlfriend kicked me out and won't take my calls. I now realize I was wrong and that while I may not love my girl's mother, I need to get over it to keep the peace. What can I do to get her to talk to me again?
Signed,
Wrong and Sorry
Dear Wrong and Sorry,
If you’ve been banished to the doghouse by your girlfriend and need help getting her back, here’s what you need to do.
Your TO DO list:
And ask her what her feelings are and what she’d like you to do differently. REMEMBER: This is your chance not to argue with her! Don’t get defensive. Practice not acting impulsively.
Now, the expensive part of the damage control.
Tell her you acted foolishly by making that comment, and nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, to help her remember this, give her a generous gift. Jewelry is always great. Make it something that will knock her socks off. And don’t forget lingerie.
