Wedding Advice - Makeup Tips for The Bride

Advice Seeker: Dear April,

My wedding day is coming up, and among the million decisions I have to make, the one I'm finding most difficult is whether to hire a makeup artist or not. I usually do not wear much--if any--makeup, and do not want to look unlike myself on my wedding day. But I know I've got to wear something for pictures and to not look washed out.

Should I just do the makeup myself, to avoid looking like I've caked it on? Or do you have any tips to ensure a makeup artist won't get carried away on my big day?

Sincerely,

Au Naturale

April Masini's advice:

Dear Au Naturale,

One of the biggest mistakes that brides make is to take on too much responsibility for their wedding day. The one day that they should shine and enjoy and take it all in is often the one day that goes by in a blur of anxiety and rushing around. My biggest piece of advice to brides on their wedding days is to hire a makeup artist to do their makeup before the wedding and before the reception.
Never have a "first run" with the makeup artist the day of the event. ALWAYS have at least one run through with the makeup artist in your gown and with your hair done the way you want it on your wedding day so that you can let your makeup artist know what you do and don't want.

Find a makeup artist by being aware of other brides who have makeup that you like. Ask your local hair dresser to recommend someone. You can even find a makeup artist at department store beauty counters who will be willing to freelance for you the day of your wedding.
