What You Should And Shouldn't Wear This Summer

Summer Style Watch

Advice Seeker: Dear April,

Summer is coming and I need to clean out my closets! I want to be entirely in style this season, but I need a little help learning what the best Summer styles are this year. What are some must-have items I should have in my closet come the Summer months and what should I stay far away from?

Sincerely,

Summer Fashion Plate

April Masini's advice:

Dear Summer Fashion Plate,

  • The best way to celebrate the Spring and Summer fashion changes is to take off those trousers and shed those blue jeans in exchange for a flirty, light Summer or Spring dress.
  • Dresses feel flirty and summery especially after a cold and wet Winter. The best way to remember you have a body under that wool, cashmere and tightly knit cotton is to take it all off and feel your skin against the brush of a dress.

  • Dresses show off your legs. If you've got 'em, flaunt 'em. Dresses are being shown in all lengths -- from the Prada-like mini to the boho-maxi. Whether it's just your ankles you want to show off, or your gams all the way up to your thighs, choose one of this season's lengths that is appropriate for your event, your body and your climate!

  • A small heel -- or a high heel -- will give your leg a lift and show off your calves, ankles and thighs. Legs look sexier with a heel, so if you've got your pedicure going, pick up a pair of sexy sandals and give your dress that extra oomph.

  • Dresses this Spring and Summer really run the gamut from body hugging to loose and free. You can find a fashionable style for almost any figure. Choose one to show off your best asset.
Here are some summer dress don'ts to remember:

*Don't lump a big, bulky sweater left over from Thanksgiving on top of your new Summer frock. If you're chilly, choose a Summer sweater or wrap that is flattering to your dress.

*Flip flops and flats are all the rage, but don't be a fashion victim. If your dress needs a heel to complete your look, don't just grab the flip flops from under the bed. Make sure you have the right shoe to go with your dress. Otherwise, what's the point?

*Shave your legs! Do not go hairy with a pretty, new dress. Choose your weapon against unwanted hair -- whether it's your razor, waxing or permanent hair removal, take your hair seriously -- not just the hair on top of your head. You don't want people staring at your hairy legs when you'd rather they're looking at all of you.
