What Is Your College Boyfriend Or Girlfriend Actually Doing On Their Phone

College is a great time to have relationships, especially because it tends to be when you’re first striking out on your own. Some college relationships last for years and some are just flings, but either way, they help you develop an understanding of how to be in a relationship.
However, as you’re developing an understanding of relationships, so are the people you’re dating. That’s one of the reasons that cheating is so common in college; people tend to be less committed and more willing to strike out, with or without your knowledge.
So, is your college sweetheart cheating on you? According to a survey from OneClass, there’s a decent chance it’s true. If you want to make sure that your boyfriend or girlfriend is staying loyal, here are the biggest takeaways from OneClass’s survey.
They Likely Won’t Be Using a Dedicated Dating App
You’d think that you could easily tell if your partner is cheating on you — all you have to do is look for dating profiles, right? Actually, it’s more likely that they’re using a social media app. Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook make up 41.6% of the apps that cheating college students used to meet up with people.
Overall, 57.7% of people used social apps to find people rather than dedicated dating apps. The biggest social media offender was Snapchat, at 20.8%, while the biggest dating app used was Tinder at only 11.8%.
Men Are More Likely to Cheat and Feel Comfortable Doing It
The general conception of cheating is that men are more likely to cheat than women, and that seems to hold true with these college statistics. Men are 2.4 times more likely to actually meet up with someone than women. Men are also more comfortable cheating than women are. 21.2% of men said they feel “Very Comfortable” using social apps without their partner knowing compared to 7.5% of women.
It’s even starker with dating apps. 31.1% of men said they feel “Very Comfortable” using dating apps without their partner knowing, which is over twice the amount of women and nearly twice the amount of men who said they feel “Very Uncomfortable.”
If Your Partner Is Cheating, They’re Equally Likely to Feel Comfortable or Guilty
Sometimes, all of these numbers can make it feel like your partner could be cheating on you and not even care. While it’s true that the bleaker end of the spectrum isn’t exactly heartwarming, it might make you feel better to know that not everyone just flirts with reckless abandon.
When it comes to flirting with someone on a dating app, only 20.9% of people said they felt Very Comfortable, and 23.5% said they felt Very Uncomfortable. In fact, nearly half of people either said they felt Very Uncomfortable or Uncomfortable, and only 28.7% chose Very Comfortable or Comfortable. If they are flirting with someone else, it could just be that they feel unfulfilled. You may just need to sit down and have a heart-to-heart conversation.
So, Is My Boyfriend or Girlfriend Cheating?
It’s true that college students are likely to cheat. A substantial percentage of college students are flirting with someone who’s not their partner, and even more have indicated that they wouldn’t feel too guilty about it. But there are a couple of reasons it may be happening — reasons that you can actually ward off.
The first is that people just aren’t suspicious about cheating is happening. In fact, 91% of people surveyed said they don’t suspect their current partners of using dating apps behind their back. This doesn’t mean you have to be jealous or overbearing, but it does mean that you have to be open to the possibility that your partner is cheating and address it head-on if you start seeing those signs.
The second is that, of course, you can’t have an affair with only one person. Single men are actually more likely to have flirted with someone who was in a relationship than not. Again, you don’t have to restrict your partner’s access to single people. But it is important to be open about your feelings if you notice that someone’s getting a little too close.
At the end of the day, the only way to know if your boyfriend or girlfriend is cheating is to talk to them. Relationships are all about open communication, so communicate. Just remember that it’s pretty common, so you might want to be a bit more suspicious than you are right now.
